Make Your Own Masters 2025
Make Your Own Masters
MAKE YOUR OWN MASTERS APPLICATIONS ARE NOW OPEN, IN A BID TO FIND THE 10 NEW CREATIVES, WHO WILL FORM THE MULTIDISCIPLINARY COLLECTIVE OF 2025.
MYOM is a creative learning movement looking to tackle the ‘drop off’ between university and industry. Each year the project builds a multi-disciplinary, multi-background collective, bringing people together with the common goal of forging a year of self-directed learning, and breaking down the barriers many face in pursuit of a creative career.
MYOM is a grassroots movement supporting those from underrepresented backgrounds struggling to access the creative industry. If you're finding it hard to break into the field or can’t afford to re-enter education and access an MA, why not Make Your Own?
Applications are now open and close on December 14th 2024.
Why it exists
Arts education within the UK has long been considered a luxury, with a price tag to match. Built from a personal lack of access MYOM was founded in 2018 by Stacie Woolsey when she found herself unable to afford a post-graduate education after being quoted £40,000 by a leading arts institution. ‘The creative industry is tough to crack, I’d never know anybody who had been to university before, never mind work within a creative field, so getting my foot in the door and trying to pay London rent at the same time was really taking its toll. I thought if I could go back to uni, figure out what I was trying to do, and gain more qualifications, I would make myself really employable. Yet the reality was that I was never going to be able to afford those fees, and if you can’t afford it, you can’t go. I couldn’t find any way around this barrier and was incredibly close to giving in, but then I decided to give it one last push and try to take matters into my own hands. It was a thought on a bit of a whim, but that’s how this whole thing started...
‘If you can’t afford to buy an education, why not MAKE YOUR OWN’.
What happens
Make Your Own Masters is an 18 months experimental learning system, and this will be the third cohort of learners to ever, go through the programme. Due to start in March 2025, MYOM is completed on a part-time basis, learners will source briefs, mentorship and space directly from industry to build a bespoke year of education and simultaneously a professional network.
MYOM offers a series of sessions focused on achieving a sustainable work/life/learning balance, designed to help you build your practice, expand your network, and create new opportunities all while sustaining yourself financially.
You’ll also have personal 1:1 sessions with the MYOM founder and alumni, plus specialised training and talks from external industry supporters and partners, who have all donated their time and expertise to the project.
MYOM provides a community and structure to help you shape your own unique year of learning. The program concludes with each participant defining their own ‘Masters’ and adopting a new creative title that reflects their journey and growth all presented in a final show, traditionally held at Somerset House.
MYOM is an experimental, independent learning initiative—unaffiliated with institutions and created by individuals who believe in forging their own paths. This is not a traditional educational program; rather, it's a community-driven project started by one individual and continued by those with a shared vision.
