Proving that you don’t necessarily need a degree to pursue your passion, Shenell Kennedy is a London-based fashion and portrait photographer who learnt the ropes of her medium through YouTube. A successful fashion and music photographer with countless print features, Holly's TikTok is packed full of incredible insight. From shoot breakdowns that offer BTS insight into her editorial shoots for magazines, to run-throughs of the editing process and tips on making work on a budget – Holly's commitment to 'anti-gatekeeping' means her account is a great resource for emerging photographers looking for inspiration.

2. Sophia Carey on YouTube

Sophia Carey’s YouTube channel showcases all things fashion, portrait and street photography. Mainly a film photographer, but also an occasional shooter of Sony digital cameras, she gives pointers on everything from how to choose props for product photography (above) and how to invoice, to discussing whether to register as a sole trader or limited company.

3. Grainydays on YouTube

Run by a photographer who focuses on film photography, grainydays' channel features a mix of tutorials, camera reviews, photo walks and discussions about the artistic and technical aspects of shooting on film. Good for beginners and more experienced photographers, his passion for the process is infectious. If you're thinking about getting into film photography and don't know where to start, this account might be a good place!

4. Ejatu Shaw on YouTube

A London-based visual artist and multidisciplinary content creator, Ejatu Shaw's work primarily explores themes of identity, culture, race and gender, reflecting her experiences as a Black, Muslim British woman. Offering us a look behind the curtain, Ejatu's YouTube channel is also treasure trove for budding photographers. It offers videos on her creative process, photography techniques, and personal experiences, with video highlights including street photography adventures in New York City, practical tips for capturing stunning portraits and behind-the-scenes looks at professional photo shoots.

5. Contemporary100 on TikTok

Rather than how-tos or kit reviews, Shenell explains that this channel has “some amazing breakdowns of photographic stories,” which she loves and “finds really inspirational sometimes.” Often venturing into the realm of the weird and wacky, contemporary100 makes videos around art and design, spotlighting artists' techniques, doing virtual gallery tours and curating trend segments about things going on in the world of art and design. 6. Willem Verbeeck on YouTube

This is another channel that film photographers will find insightful. Having moved from New York to Los Angeles, his 410,000 subscribers watch him do things like turn his kitchen into a darkroom (above) and review a variety of 35mm films, ranging from the expensive to the weird. He’s even shot American rapper, Young M.A!

7. Sean Tucker on YouTube

A street and portrait photographer, Sean Tucker’s channel mostly focuses on sharing tutorials and advice. Essential videos for photographers include knowing the ethics and laws of street photography, why imitating other photographers is important and why your best photos are closer than you think. Those wanting to learn more about retouching can also watch his tutorials on recolouring your images and mastering contrast using Photoshop.

8. Darnell Temenu on YouTube

Another London-based fashion and portrait photographer, content creator and YouTuber known for his vibrant and spontaneous style, Darnell Temenu's channel provides insights into his work, photography tips and behind-the-scenes looks at various projects. Often focusing on street photography, he emphasises practising spontaneity and creativity in your work.
