What I do

How would you describe what you do?
As an AI writer, I test and train large language models (LLMs) to provide ethical responses. As a marketing officer, I promote theatre shows and events for [North London arts centre] artsdepot.

Would you say you need any specific training for what you do?
My MA in Digital Culture and Society was pivotal – it helped me realise that AI was something I wanted to pursue. During the course, I focused my research on algorithmic fairness and AI creativity. I also completed a Fast Futures data analysis course last year which was incredibly helpful. Coursera and Khan Academy are helpful for maths and statistics, too.

The Meta AI chatbot Nafisah helped train

What’s been your favourite project to work on from the past year, and why?
Training the new Meta AI chatbot was a standout project. It was exciting to be part of the Meta workspace and see the impact of my work.

What does a typical day look like for you?
As an AI writer, I start my day by checking tech news outlets or engaging with ethical tech communities. Then, I train models and refine their responses to meet client guidelines. As a marketing officer, I begin with tea and emails, followed by tasks like writing newsletters, posting on social media, updating the website and watching rehearsals.

How I got here

How did you get started in your career?
I knew I wanted to work in marketing but wasn’t set on an industry, so I explored roles in banking, fashion, events, tech and charity. Finding my feet in each role was difficult, but starting in fast-paced environments like banking taught me to adapt quickly. My first internship in fashion marketing came from The Dots, a fantastic platform for creatives.

What’s been your biggest challenge along the way?
Figuring out which sector felt right for me. It’s easy to feel unsure when you’re starting out, but working in industries that genuinely excite you makes all the difference.

“It’s easy to feel unsure when you’re starting out, but working in industries that genuinely excite you makes all the difference.”

How important is social media to your work?
When I first started in marketing, I used social media a lot to promote my work. I’ve gained a lot of opportunities on LinkedIn, so I’d highly recommend staying active on there.

What are three things that you’ve found useful to your work or career, and why?

  1. Trying out almost everything you feasibly can to help you discover what you truly enjoy.
  2. Being open to change – careers rarely follow a linear path!
  3. Embracing the present. Things change constantly, so live in the moment instead of dwelling on the past or over-planning the future.

Have there been any courses, programmes, initiatives, access schemes or job boards you’ve found helpful or would recommend to get into your sector?
All Tech is Human
is a great community for those interested in ethical tech. While I haven’t done any specific programmes myself, there’s plenty of helpful content online. I’d recommend doing research on the topics you care about – for me, that’s algorithmic fairness.

When I was around 18 or 19, I knew I wanted to work in marketing, but I stayed open to exploring different areas.

My advice

What advice would you give to someone looking to get into a similar role? Where could they start; what steps could they take?
AI writing is all about creativity and thinking of different scenarios. There are plenty of courses on AI ethics that are worth exploring. I found my way into AI by researching it and understanding its impact on society.

Do you have any advice for people who want to take some first steps to learn about AI?
Start by learning how everyday AI tools, like ChatGPT, work. From there, you can explore various paths and access a wealth of online resources. I do think more people should consider learning about AI as it’s becoming increasingly important.
