We are recruiting three individuals from the BPOC communities across Sussex and Hampshire to join our Community Panel to assist with decision-making and programming for our Writing Our Legacy @ Downs to the Sea programme and to act as advocates and spokespeople for the project.
This paid opportunity is open to BPOC creatives, artists and practitioners from across Sussex and Hampshire, including Brighton, East Sussex and West Sussex.
In particular, panel members will be involved in helping to decide on applications to our Writing Our Legacy @ Downs to the Sea residency bursaries and commissions.
Please note: you will need to be available to work from home and for online meetings during our sifting periods for bursaries and commissions in 2025 and 2026:
- Round 1: Early Aug 2025
- Round 2: Early Feb 2026
The panel role will last from 1 August 2025 until December 2026.
The fee is £300 for 12 hours worked (£25 per hour) across the two years.
More information about the role
The panel membership opportunity aims to give local practitioners the agency to educate and promote the importance of water and habitats, encouraging more people to think more about their local nature, develop a greater appreciation for restoration work and feel encouraged to get involved with the project.
The panel will meet online/in person at least twice a year to discuss applications and other programme updates.
There will be opportunities to attend two Writing Our Legacy @ Downs to the Sea celebrations, and WOL will cover expenses, agreed in advance.
Please note: participation in other Writing Our Legacy @ Downs to the Sea public activities is optional and will be on a voluntary basis.
Eligibility and access
Applicants must be Black*, Asian or ethnically diverse writers and live in the project region, which includes Brighton, East Sussex, West Sussex or Hampshire. We may accept applicants from other parts of the South East of England, provided there is a good rationale presented in the proposal, including a firm commitment to dates.
How to apply
The panel will be decided through an open application process.
The deadline for applications is Monday 28 July at midday.
To apply, please send a short statement (up to 400 words) about why you’d like to be involved and a CV to [email protected]
The decision panel will include WOL CEO/Founder, Amy Glass, and Programme Manager, Pauline Rutter, plus at least one WOL board member and one representative from the Downs to the Sea partnership.
More information about Writing Our Legacy @ Downs to the Sea
Writing Our Legacy is pleased to be part of a three-year nature programme called Downs to the Sea, which focuses on recovery and resilience in wetland habitats, funded with a £1.7mn grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund for activities from 2025 to 2027.
Downs to the Sea brings together a partnership comprising the South Downs National Park Trust, South Downs National Park Authority, Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, Western Sussex Rivers Trust, Brighton and Hove City Council and Writing Our Legacy.
The partnership focuses on the two following strands:
- Water in the landscape, focused on restoring and improving vital wetlands, ponds and rivers, and increasing the landscape’s resilience to climate change and other threats;
- Water in people’s lives, focused on connecting people to natural heritage and the water in their lives, to benefit their health and wellbeing, to develop skills and knowledge, and to help protect precious freshwater resources that are vital to our communities.
