We are looking for a Freelance Research Assistant to take part in an impactful, creatively rich, public photography project, offering flexible, independent work with valuable experience in outreach, storytelling, and cultural engagement.
You will assist in supporting outreach, scheduling, and participant coordination—bringing voices and faces from diverse migrant communities in London. You’ll help illuminate migrant experiences contributing to a project that brings visibility to stories often unheard.
100 Years, 100 Migrants is a compelling photographic initiative by award‑winning photographers David Tett and Carmen Valino, celebrating migration's impact on London through the stories of 100 individuals. We will be creating a series of 100 powerful portraits featuring 100 different individuals from 100 different countries and spanning 100 different age groups (from 1 to 100). As well as the photos we will be interviewing participants, allowing them to share their unique background stories and experiences in their own words. The project is supported by the GLA, The Migration Museum, and Refugee Week https://refugeeweek.org.uk/100-years-100-migrants-a-photography-project-by-david-tett-and-carmen-valino/
We have already photographed 33 people for this project and are gaining momentum. You can see the project's progress on our instagram page https://www.instagram.com/100years100migrants/
This is not an employment contract and you will be working independently, setting your own hours, and being paid on a commission basis per individual booked/scheduled and we have subsequently photographed. This opportunity is ideal for someone looking for flexible, part-time freelance work with a social impact focus.
Key Responsibilities:
- Identify and reach out to potential participants from varied migrant communities.
- Articulate the project’s vision with clarity and cultural sensitivity.
- Together with David and Carmen help schedule and coordinate photo sessions with confirmed subjects.
Ideal skills/attributes:
- Strong communication skills and cultural empathy.
- Interest or experience in research, outreach, or community projects.
- Ability to work autonomously and manage your own schedule.
- Personal or professional connection to London’s migrant communities is advantageous.
Payment & Terms:
- Freelance commission-based role — paid a fixed fee per participant who attends and completes a scheduled session.
- Payment issued promptly following each confirmed session.
