Newham Music are partnering with Cody Dock on a project involving local residents and partners in the creation of a new sound piece celebrating the river. We are putting out a call for new and existing works.
Blending field recordings captured by local young people at Cody Dock with a new musical commission, the sound piece will celebrate the rich cultural, ecological and sonic heritage of Newham’s riverside. Inspired by and featuring the natural waterscape in Newham, the project aims to increase awareness and promote ownership of local ecologies and environments.
This collaboration between partners situated close to the river reflects the vital creative community forming along Newham’s riverbanks, from Stratford to the Royal Docks. As well as celebrating the local environment, we also want to foreground emerging local creatives.
To contribute to the piece, we are announcing an open call for emerging musicians, composers, sound artists and sound designers to submit a piece inspired by the river. This could explore the sounds of water, the river’s role as a connector of people, or the rich habitat it provides for wildlife.
The selected composition will be embedded in a wider sound piece featuring field recordings captured at Cody Dock. The chosen creator will take part in 2 masterclasses with our sound designer to learn more about sound design and co-create the final piece. This will offer an opportunity to learn more about composing and producing for digital and immersive contexts. The workshop will provide an opportunity for artists to further develop the piece and receive professional feedback on both the submission and wider creative practice.
All works will be judged by Newham Music, our commissioned sound designer and Cody Dock on the basis of their response to the theme and their suitability to be blended with field recordings. Please note that the piece may be edited or adapted by Newham Music’s sound designer to ensure they blend coherently within the final work.
The final piece will be showcased at Cody Dock as part of the Totally Thames festival and exhibited digitally on partner websites.
The selected artist will receive a fee of £200.
