Opportunity for one artist to get a £5,000 flat commission fee as well as be part of a 4-month mini residency including a mentorship programme led by The Collective Makers, a panel talk and much more. We’re looking for bold creative voices to uncover untold stories connected to the ocean.

The Collective Makers (TCM) and Royal Museums Greenwich (RMG) are teaming up to launch an experimental artist residency programme. We are inviting one creative practitioner to respond to The Ocean Map; a newly installed feature in RMG's recently transformed Ocean Court space. This commission seeks to bring new perspectives to the map, which radically reimagines how we look at the world's oceans, placing Antarctica at its centre.

We are especially interested in artist-led interventions that rethink the ocean using creative technology. This can include AI, multimedia, photography, moving image, animation or interactive digital works. We invite artists to challenge dominant narratives and offer fresh perspectives on how we relate to the ocean and its layered histories.

The selected artist will:

  • Receive a £5,000 commission fee
  • Be part of a 4-month mini residency
  • Take part in mentorship sessions led by The Collective Makers
  • Collaborate with RMG departments (Digital, Research, Collections, Engagement, Curatorial and Exhibition & Design)
  • Host public workshops and focus groups during the residency
  • Participate in a live panel talk to share their journey and research
  • Be professionally documented throughout the programme
  • Dedicated space in the museum

Mentorship programme will include:

  • Focus on articulating artistic practice and accessing archives
  • Engagement in research and development (R&D) phases
  • Development of commissioned work and exploration of creative entrepreneurship
  • Guidance on financial management for artists
  • Introduction to marketing strategies for creative practices
  • Wellbeing sessions, highlighting the importance of creative rest
  • Support on how to apply for funding
  • Preparation for participation in a panel talk
  • Completion of evaluation reports to reflect on learning and development
