Are you considering becoming a Motion Designer? Whether it’s an ad, film or interactive website you’ve seen recently, motion design very likely played a big part in bringing it to life. But what exactly do Motion Designers do, and how do you get started in this field? Our next What is...? event is here to break it down, giving you the inside scoop from industry pros who’ve been there and done it.

Join us online on Thursday 23rd April, from 5pm to 7.30pm BST as our expert panel unpacks what it means to be a motion designer. They'll share practical tips, honest insights and first-hand experiences to help you understand what motion design is really all about. They’ll discuss:

  • The fundamentals of motion design
  • Their work and current roles
  • Their unique paths into industry
  • Essential skills, training and tools for success

After the discussion, you’ll have the chance to ask your own questions in a live Q&A.

Who will be there?

This event will be hosted by the brilliant Zoe Thompson, freelance zine-maker and facilitator. Zoe will be joined by a stellar line-up of industry professionals, including motion designers from our Company Partners. Check out the full line-up below:

Dan Ioannou

Creative Lead and Motion Designer at Human After All who builds visual stories through a mix of illustration, brand, and video. I mostly focus on turning rough ideas into intentional work, usually fueled by a lot of overthinking and a bit of instinct.

Jade Kuzak

Jade Kuzak is a Motion Designer exploring how design systems merge visual identity and movement. At BUCK New York, her concept-driven and iterative approach shapes branding and motion work, while her personal practice grows through curiosity, research, and experimentation.

Tom Allen

Tom Allen is co-founder and Creative Director at Buff Motion, a motion-first creative studio recognised for its brand-led, strategic motion that enhances brand experience. Buff is committed to meeting high standards of social and environmental performance, with an approach rooted in care for its people, processes and craft.

Shirley Wang

Shirley is a freelance Motion and Graphic Designer based in London. With a conceptual approach, she specialises in motion graphics, graphic design, and art direction. She is currently freelancing with Apple Music and was previously at Pentagram, Koto, and at brands such as Clinique, McLaren Racing (F1), and Nothing.

Roger Young Jr

Roger Young Jr. is a Manhattan-based Motion Director at Huge Inc. with 17 years of experience in motion design. He blends animation, illustration, and visual storytelling for global brands including Google, Apple, and Crunchyroll. His work spans motion graphics, creative direction, and digital design across campaigns, products, and brand experiences.

Zoe Thompson

Zoe, our host, is a London-based zine-maker, facilitator and event host, bringing the joy of zine-making to brands and people through workshops and editorial design. She champions the power of zine culture as a radical tool of expression and designs workshops centred around embodied play, facilitating warm, joyful and accessible spaces for collective making. Zoe is also the founder of sweet-thang zine, a community platform publishing work by Black creatives worldwide.

Starting out in the creative industry can feel overwhelming – there are so many different roles out there, and it’s not always clear where you might fit in. That’s where our What is...? series comes in.

These events shine a light on different creative careers, offering direct insights from professionals who share their experiences and advice.

How to register

Our What is...? events are for anyone at the start of their creative journey – whether you’re still studying, a recent graduate, self-taught or switching careers.

This event is open to:

  • Emerging creatives (aged 18 and over)
  • Those with an interest in working in the creative industry – no previous experience or portfolio necessary!
